what determines if there is a presidential primary democratic election?

if an incumbent wishes to run again, is it necessarily true that there will not be a democratic primary? or is it dependent on whether or not there are interested candidates?

    I was told that it is a kind of curtsey/tradition for the party to go with the incumbent by default. Sorry, not totally sure but no one else replied yet so thought I would try to give something that helps.
